Hello All -
Just wanted to say hello. I am so excited to start raising chickens. We live in town and have restrictions on what we can have in the backyard. Just found out that the city code was changed - we can now have as many birds as we want however, no roos, they all must be contained and coops cleaned daily. No one will ever check the cleaning of course unless, the smell gets out of hand. History...we had chickens when I was a kid. I was in charge of egg gathering and I HATED it - more of a chore thing than a chicken thing. We had both layers and meat chickens and remember many a sunny afternoon watching my father butchering chickens and the family's springer spaniel keeping an eye on them as they ran headless into the tall meadow grass. Fast forward to today...DD has this "over the rainbow" grand idea about egg collection and wants to be "just like Mom when she was a kid". Cute...but the novelty will wear off eventually. Aside from that, I'm not sure why I'm so excited about raising chickens. We get our two (I'm starting small) BO girls tomorrow - hopefully - and picked up all the pieces parts from the farm store last night. Our girls will be pets and we play to show them at the fair in open class. DD's 4-H group doesn't have a chicken leader. Heck, if I get comfortable maybe I'll be a chicken leader next year. DH built a brooder lid for our Rubbermaid bin brooder and has roughed out several designs for the coop and run. I think secretly he may think I'm crazy for wanting to do this but seems to be enjoying the fact that he gets to build something. So that's it for me. BTW, yes, this site is very addicting. LOL!
