I say go for that book. I suffer from depression and if it wasn't for my chickens I'd be in a much darker place. I was never depressed until I was taken out of work. Chickens have helped me so much. Good luck and I hope to see you around the threads. If you ever want to find me I'm usually on , grannys gone and done it thread.Hi all! I hope things are going well for everyone today. I just signed up today after being a Google lurker for about a year.My name is Erica. I look forward to connecting and learning! I figured I would just copy and paste the questionairre for ease.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
1 year into caring for and keeping chickens. So far so good. It really is an enjoyable and fun hobby.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 23 chickens and one mix breed turkey of unknown breed and 6 Royal Palm Turkey
(3) What breeds do you have?
6 Royal Palm Turkey
1 male turkey of unknown breed.
1 Australorp female
10 Silver Laced Wyandotte females
1 Spangled Hamburg Rooster
1 Gamecock of some sort
1 White hen that I suspect is a white Wyandotte as it came from the hatchery with the Silver Laced
8 Backyard variety mix of the Australorp and Gamecock
1 Backyard mix of the now sold male Wyandotte and the white hen
I name my roosters after old school Country music artists except for Russell...Russell Crow that is...
I have taken over the responsibility of the care of the chickens for my aging parents. They started off with the Wyandottes and the others came from here and there...people that didn't want their chickens anymore. I am pretty ignorant to the technicalities of chicken breeding, and really don't intend to do it except to make pretty chickens that lay decent quantity of eggs I can use and sell. I may, at some point, start breeding purebred once I have much more education or desire. Last year I hatched 11 (6 roosters / 5 hens) with a cardboard box, straw and a heat lamp in a work building...one even hatched in the box by the dumpster from week old discarded eggs and survived outside for 3 days before I heard and found her!!!!! Her name is Marvel and she is the reason I'm crazy chicken lady. I went through a divorce and moved here from another city. The very day after I moved some of the eggs started hatching. Somehow the other chickens were killing them so I took them all away and put them in a box with a heat lamp. I had no clue they'd actually hatch but they did. I've actually considred writing a book about healing heartache or emotional troubles through raising chickens because it really was therapeutic to have sweet birds to take care of and nurture. It was definitly a healing experience.
I am selling the Turkey babies when they hatch. I am not hatching them myself; instead letting the mama and nature do the work. My male Royal Palm literally sat on the last clutch of eggs the entire time. I suppose my female is a raging feminist or something. haha
