Hello everyone, I am from New Brunswick in Eastern Canada. I am looking forward to sharing the experience of raising and caring for laying hens with my 2 1/2 year old Granddaughter and her sibling due to arrive a few days before her 3rd birthday in September.
Although I am new to laying hens I raised homing pigeons and Bob white quail for quite a few years.
We purchased a 3 meter Eglu Cube and I am building an 8" x 10" portable pen (tractor) extension to give our birds the recommended sqft. We have 2.5 acres of field to move the coop and pen allowing for fresh grass, seeds and bugs.
When winter comes along I will(clear) tarp both the Eglu and portable pens. Don't worry I'll make sure they have shade for those warmer days too.
We have a local breeder raising 6 chicks for us now, 4 eggers (hope to get some colored eggs) and 2 brown layers. near the end of may they will be 6 and 8 weeks old, I think it will be warm enough for them then.
Over the last few weeks I have found this website quite informative, it's nice to read the kind respective comments from everyone.
