Just wanted to introduce myself here as this looks to be the way to go. My name is Mike and I moved to the country 6 yrs ago. I live in New Brunswick, Canada and I've wanted chickens since day one and I finally decided to take the plunge. I'm almost done my coop and I've read lots of great ideas and tips.

We plan on having 4 or 5 chickens for eggs and my wife and kids have been eager to get chickens too. It's been a team effort so far from everyone.

I'd love to hear from others in New Brunswick, canada about how the chickens are in the winter. So please drop me a line and let me know what you do.
What a great site and everyone has great ideas and the help offered is fantastic. Cheers!

Hey mike! We're new to raising hens also. We live in Moncton, got our flock of 12 almost 2 weeks ago. They are super happy with their coop which my husband constructed from scrap lumber. They are fenced in using dog fencing with rocks around perimeter. We also have kids, though young, my son 2.5 loves to interact with them. And my daughter, 9 months, talks to them. This will be our first winter, but plan to insulate the coop, use an infrared bulb for heat (and apparently doesn't mess with they're laying pattern). So far, only 2 are laying, I gather they are still stressed from the move.

I will post pics soon.

Hello Marblegas. Nice to hear you have a couple laying. I'm sure the other one will soon. I get different views on whether to insulate or not to. I figure I'm going to make sure it's nice and dry, block the northern wind and will keep a lamp in it for the winter. I built my coop inside a dog run that our dog never uses (she's really good staying in the yard).

What kind did you decide on? Did you get them locally?

Hi Mike,
I'm in Fredericton and just got four Rhode Island Reds in June. They were a little older pullets when we got them, around 10-12 weeks, and I found 4 small eggs in the nesting box this morning from 2 of them.

Welcome!!
