I'm retired and have plenty of time for this new addiction. I can remember having chickens, geese and turkeys when I was a young girl growing up on our farm.
My husband and I were given 7 bantams from a friend he worked with. He said they were 6 hens and 1 rooster. Turned out to be 4 roosters and 3 hens. We found a new home for the roosters. Then we added 2 barred rock bantam hens to the flock and a week later decided to get the barred rock rooster too. He'd been pining since we took his ladies. So, now we have 1 rooster and 5 hens.
As mentioned, 3 are barred rock. I have no clue what the other 3 hens are. . . . I call them Heinz 57's and sometimes just "the wild bunch". Before we got them, they'd had the run of the place and hadn't been handled at all.
I'm so glad I found Backyard Chickens. Since we're new, we will have many questions.
My hobby has always been genealogy. My husband and I enjoy riding on our Harley.
We have a total of 6 children between us, 11 (maybe 12) grandchildren, and two cats.
Although I'm retired, my husband still works. He's a heavy equipment mechanic.
