Hello! I'm gonna give a brief introduction of myself and my experiences with poultry.
Both sides of my family come from rural Polish backgrounds, so I spent the first few years of my life living on a farm with cows, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, and turkeys. I still vividly remember when a gander jumped on my head when I was three.
Unfortunately, my family immigrated to America and the suburbs when I was still small.
Some of my extended family remains in Poland and still own farms. My grandmother raises broilers for meat (not commercially). My aunt raises mixed and (quite ironically) Polish chickens for eggs, and turkeys for meat.
My visit to my grandfather's farm in Poland a few years ago is what really started my interest in poultry. I bought two day-old ducklings while there (I assume they were Pekin), and they were kept with my grandmother's broilers for three weeks. Unfortunately, two weeks after I returned to America, a dog got loose and both of my ducklings along with a hen perished.
I discovered this site about a week ago and joined today. I don't currently own any poultry in my backyard, but I hope to raise some hens and maybe geese eventually.
