Mallory Xavier
Hatching
Hello! I'm Mallory and 6 weeks ago Rose, Lily, Bluebell and Clover joined our family bringing us to an awesome total of 7. I am a home-based caregiver and I think it is important for children to experience pets as I think it teaches them about caring, gentleness and responsibility. Chickens are an ideal pet because the kids can be out every day with little chicken related jobs (food, water, kitchen scraps etc).
Our dog Toto has been with us for a little over a year and she is totally infatuated with the chicks. Her and Bluebell have formed an especially special bond with Bluebell having imprinted on Toto straight away.
We are loving getting to know each chick and their specific personalities. Bluebell is the cuddly one and is also a bit of a shy loner when it comes to the group. Rose is the big boss (and we suspect might be a rooster) standing out front whenever anyone approaches the group. Rose also seems to think that I'm a chicken and runs about wildly, making a lot of noise if he(?) spots me inside the house rather than by the run. Lily is the bully of the group, always flapping at the others and trying to push her/his way onto the top perch to be king of the castle. Clover started off skittish but is now the friendliest, often offering her/himself to be held and patted by the small children that I care for.
I'm hoping that someone here will be able to tell me if my chicks are hens or roos as living in the suberbs, I will have to give any roos back to the farm we got the chicks from (happily they don't kill them but rather let them freerange their land)
