Hello! I'm Beth, I've been lurking for a while but I finally decided to join the site
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not new to chickens, I was born and raised on a farm in rural nz, we've had chickens since I was about 6, various different breeds
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I'm not 100% sure what the current count is right now, but about 15. We have them in a large run with lots of over, some of them like hiding (which is why we now have 15 unexpected chicks between 4 hens. 2 of the hens are co-raising 6 chicks though, another has 1 chick and yesterday a hen hatched 8)
(3) What breeds do you have?
None of our current chickens are 'pure breed', they're all mixes apart from our orpington rooster, Boy, and the new leghorn rooster, Sir. The main breeds mixed in the flock are orpington, faverolle, sussex and a few hens that we were told were 'bantam mixes'. A few were solid black, a few brown speckled. I'll try post some pictures later, maybe someone can tell me what breed they are
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Googling questions, mostly about introducing new chicks to broody hens (it worked!) and hen's co-raising chicks (also going very well, one of the mothers has co-raised chicks with a different hen before. All the hens are sisters from the same clutch)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a photography student, so that. I'm really into fictional podcasts, if that counts as a hobby
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm currently a student doing a bachelor of design specializing in photography. I'm living at home with my parents and sister for the summer before going back to poly tech for my last year.
My parents own a large farm in NZ, so I've always had animals around. Between me and my sister we've had a lot of pet lambs and calves over the years. Less so when we got into high school.
The current pets aside from chickens are the two 'house' dogs, Johnny the corgi and Kate the Labrador. Kate is actually a hunting dog, so she was very confused (and a little scared) by the chickens when we got her because she wasn't used to live birds being anywhere near her. Boy the rooster will eat her food straight out of her bowl if we don't shoo him off. My dad also has 3 work dogs, Boss, Flea and Storm. All are Very Good Girls
The chickens are mostly my mum's, but I've claimed the older lot of chicks because they love me
