Hello! Thank you for creating this wonderful website! It has been my go to site for information about my chickens since I started taking care of my mother-in-law's flock this year. I have 3 adult hens: a Rhode Island Red, a black bantam, and I don't know she has yellow feathers and lays lovely light green shelled eggs. On April 22 I picked up three new baby chicks and a turkey poult. They will be 8 weeks tomorrow! Teen agers already!
I have no idea what I am doing. Just keeping the yard clean from poop, water clean, feeders full and dry. Fresh pine shavings in the nesting boxes every day.
I've been told the chicks can't have calcium until they are 16 weeks, so I put everyone on the same game bird starter (28% protein) when I let the little ones out of the brooder at 5 weeks. (they were totally feathered). The adult girls don't seem to have any problems with it. The bag of game bird feed says at 8 weeks the turkey can go on grower (24%) but it also has calcium. Calcium is supposed to be bad for the kidneys and reproductive organs of the little ones. So 8 weeks or 16 weeks before I can give the little girls the grown up feed? I don't want the adults to go too long without calcium from the lay pellets.
I think I'm going to go with the grower mash the farm supply suggested from 8 to 16 weeks then move on to layer mash because they should all be ready for laying eggs at that point. I hope.
If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to comment.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your growing flock, I would wait untill the younger ones are older before starting them on any layer pellets. For the reasons you stated the extra calcium would not be good for them. You could have them all on flock raiser with oyster shell seperate on the side for the ones requiring extra calcium. They should take the shell as they require it. You could also pop over to the feeding and watering your flock section of the forum for further help. Wishing you the very best of luck with your growing flock. Enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC Yorkshire Coop has given good advice on feeding the chicks/older chickens. For your turkey poult I think it would be good to post on the Turkey thread, and ask what she should be eating at this point in time. Her needs may vary from that of chickens.
