I guess I,m a new member since i haven't been on this site for over 2 years. I had a great flock of egg layers and loved owning chickens. We downsized our home and land so I no longer have a flock. Here is the story of why I am back. Its all because of one adorable polish crested hen that was lost. My daughter rescued it from the middle of the road. It was confused and would have been hit by a car if she didnt get out and pick it up. She went to all the neighbors there and no one claimed it or knew who it belonged to. She is not like any chicken I've ever had. She is so friendly and seems so attached to my daughter. We got her a coop and we ordered a playpen with a top so she can roam freely and safely. Each night my daughter puts her in a little crate with blankets and keeps her in her room. We live in a wooded area with lots of predators. You don't even know she is in the house, not a peep out of her and she doesnt make one mess in the crate. In the morning she goes back out. We are so happy with her. I believe she thinks we are all one big flock of chickens.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I'm glad you were able to rescue the Polish hen. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Polish hen.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How lovely of your daughter to rescue the polish hen. As you say they are a breed unlike any other chicken I think that's why I love the polish so much. They are a super friendly breed and some of mine are just too tame for their own good. Some have become pirate parrots and sit on shoulders!! They can also become pests sometimes you can't go without them sitting on your feet, I would not swop how they are though for nothing.

Here is a thread for people with house chickens https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/299187/people-with-house-chickens I'm sure other members there will be happy to chat about their tips for keeping house chickens with you.

Wishing you the very best of luck with her and hope you enjoy BYC :frow

so glad you joined us.

What a sweet way to get into raising chickens. Your daughter is so kind to have rescued her new pet. IMO a house chicken would be so much fun.
