Greetings from North Idaho where the snow if coming down already...
I have a small farm which includes many animals. Of those animals, 16 are chickens...pet chickens-->12 hens and 4 roosters as it turns out. I have a preference for Bantams although my husband prefers "big" chickens and "small" horses so we have some Buff Orpingtons and a couple other bigger birds this year. I favor my frizzle rooster and silkie hens the most and breed them for Sizzles once a year in the fall. We don't eat eggs so we truly just enjoy pampering our chickens. Scratch that, "I" enjoy pampering my chickens, my husband enjoys watching me pamper my chickens. It's a win-win really.
I have two special needs birds...a silkie rooster who has a top beak that is crooked over the top of the bottom beak but he manages to eat just fine and a hen who has chronic vent clogging. Other than that all my birds enjoy a balance of coop time, fenced yard time, and acreage free-range time year round. They range with the horses, dogs, and cats in harmony. I love my chickens!
Thanks for this forum and all the wonderful information it has to offer!
