North Northern California
I got our first chickens about 40 years ago when my children were young and I lived in san luis obispo near the central CA coast. I started with 25 araucanas ordered from murray mcmurray. as they died off I bought araucanas locally to replenish the flock. we lived in a residential neighborhood.

years later, remarried with my children grown, my husband and I lived in cambria, directly on the coast, and we had a few araucanas and a pair of rouen ducks.

we moved north in the spring of 2003 to 3 1/4 acres north of fortuna, ca, on the eel river, chicken-less and duck-less, with 4 cats and 4 dogs and 350 pots of plants. we wanted away from the mainstream and close to part of my family. we added chickens the next spring. we started with arauncanas/americanas again. we added a wyandotte and some old english game chickens. we're now down to two old english roosters, one old english hen, and two old aracana hens.
the desire for new chickens has been rekindled by a flickr contact who has added some special chickens to her family. now I'm shopping for a decent incubator to hatch eggs at home.
my flickr friend sent me here to backyard chickens for information and contacts.

we have 4 dogs now, lots of flowers and shrubs created on land that was all field grass, a veggie garden, a teeny little greenhouse, and our chickens. our 4 cats are buried up here.
we're retired and have time to work, so I want more chickens. pretty ones who lay pretty eggs.

beside gardening, my husband does woodworking and the hardscape around the property. he is the veggie gardener. I do flowers and shrubs and the weeding.
and I take photographs and home develop the film.

I'm anxious to get started with the egg hatching.
