Hi folks, I cant wait to get started and build my own coop. I grew up with chickens in my back yard in the Bay Area of CA, and want to start raising my own. I will need some suggestions on the best laying and quieter breeds.

My BO's are remarkably quiet and friendly. My neighbors always comment on how little they hear them. Sometimes they ask if the chickens are okay, because they hear NOTHING. I'm getting some Ameraucana chicks this spring, so maybe the noise level will change.

My DSO has RIRs, a GLW, an Australorp, and a BR. The BR is his only quiet chicken. She also has the best personality.

My vote is for BO's and BR's.

For a backyard flock that is quiet, I vote for Buff Opington, Barred Rock, Easter-Egger, and Naked Neck. All of mine have been pretty quiet
