My wife and I just got some Speckled Sussex 2 weeks ago and we have been browsing this site for information. What a great place to spend a few hours (or days
) sharing knowledge and ideas. We are new to chickens but have researched them for the past year. We have been busy building a mobile coop (3ft by 6ft) that will have solar panels on it to power the light and heated waterer in the colder months. We will move the coop around on the 2 or 3 acres around our house, along with a moveable fence, keeping them safely locked up in their coop at night.
I just retired from the Army, which is why we waited this long to get chickens. I didn't want to put any more responsibilities on my wife and teenage son, as they had their hands full with me being gone all the time. It's great to be home for good now, and it's great to finally have our own chickens. Looking forward to sharing information and ideas, and learning a bunch from all of you.
This is day 2 with our chicks. This one refused to eat or drink when we brought them home on a Friday, so my wife stayed up until 2am Saturday morning, hand feeding it some watered down plain Greek yogurt/chick feed slop. Then later Saturday morning (7am) we had to continue hand feeding until that afternoon. Now, 2 weeks later, it still looks like the runt but it is very healthy now.
