I am brand new to chickens, and so far I am quite enjoying it! I grew up in Toronto, where having backyard chickens is unheard of (and outlawed I do believe). I figured living out here in Nova Scotia might be a good chance to try.
My fiance and I built a GIANT coop last weekend (in 35 degree celsius weather of course) 7 feet high, 3 feet wide, and 5 feet long. With a 3x7 foot run attached.
On Monday we picked up 6, 5 month old Easter Egger / Polish crosses. There's 1 rooster in there for sure, a few possibles but being so new I really have no idea haha. They have yet to wander out of their coop but from what I've read on here that's not unusual for the first little bit.
They aren't laying yet either, but the lady I bought them from told me they usually don't start until the 6 month mark.
A little confusion over bedding though. We've got hay in there now, but friends of ours with chickens say pine shavings are easier to clean up. However I think I read somewhere that shavings can be hard on their respiratory systems??
I'm going to get some pictures tomorrow to post in the indentification thread to see if someone can help me with roo vs hen. They have to the most amazing colours, and they're all different. Big reason why I bought them actually haha.
Anyways, looking forward to chatting with you all!
