Hi everyone.
I am a new member but have used all the information you have shared on Backyard Chickens since I got my 4 laying hens in January. From what to feed them to putting golf balls in their laying area - your advice has been a saver! Unfortunately not tonight I arrived home to one of my hens not moving under a bush in their area. We thought she had died but she was still breathing. I quickly came on Backyard Chickens to see what we could do. I picked her up in a towel and put her in a quiet warm dark area but unfortunately we couldn't save her. so shed my tears but you were the first forum I wanted to tell. They have all brought me great joy and eggs particularly for a girl who has never had animals....
Thank you backyard for all your advice & I do feel you get what I am feeling tonight. Thanks for letting me share
Lou

so sorry to hear about your hen. Do you think a predator attacked her or maybe a snake? It's always hard to loose one.

I'm sure you will have more responses when people wake up over here. I am a night owl and pop in through out the day time hours also. I have a friend in OZ, who used to email really early in our mornings and it worked out fine because I was still up from the night before.

Yea the weird thing is we don't have predators like you guys do. I have dogs but seriously the chickens rule them - the dogs pull down the netting to let the chickens out! We know who is the boss here! There were a lot of feathers but nothing else. She was a pretty kool chicken tho - if anything came near - we would hear about it from her!! Such is life but it was seriously nice to share with people that get 'it'. You must be a night owl it is only 8pm here!! Sleep well and thanks for your thoughts

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your hen. All of us who have raised chickens for any length of time have experienced it (numerous times in many of our cases), and yet, it's always sad to lose one of your birds, no matter how long you've been raising them. How old, and what breed was she?

Thank you so much - This was Gertie. It was pretty quiet this morning in the chook house as she always either yelled for me to get up or came up to the back door if I was late for food! I'm not 100% sure what breed she was or how old they look like Rhode Island Reds. I got them from a friend who owns a free range farm here in NZ she did tell me what they were but once I named them and their personalities came out - they just became Gertie, Penelope, Florence and Sally. They are amazing layers and all laid in the boxes on their car ride to me! Be interesting to see if Gertie gone makes any difference to the other 3. She was leader of the pack, loudest, last in and first out. Very bossy! Thanks again for all the support I feel better now that I know part of raising chickens is losing them - its just so sad though!

By the way, not saying that you will do anything bad, but no fowl play
