I just found and joined this site yesterday, and glad I found you all..
I am a circumstantial chicken keeper.. Circumstances being that a neighbor got chickens that he would not feed or keep in a pen, and also had a chicken chasing/chicken killing dog..Chickens would come over here to get away from the dog, and to eat under my bird feeders..Neighbor's dog AND my dogs would chase and mangle chickens..I rescued those that I could, then one hen sat on eggs in neighbor's yard til they hatched, and she promptly brought them here and never went back..I had to build pens hurriedly..Id love to let them roam around free, but cannot due to dogs, coyotes, etc.. Another old looking rooster who is blind in one eye brought himself over and I found him sleeping on top of one the chicken pens..Being blind in one eye made it easy for me to catch him..
So that's how I got started in having chickens..I guess I would have eventually anyway because my grandmother and g-grandmother always had chickens, and I have always loved them..
