Hello! We have had chickens for 2 years now, 6 Americaunas the first year and 12 more last spring. We also tried raising meat chickens last spring, not sure if we are doing that again this year.
WE LOVE OUR CHICKENS! They are hilarious, and give us such lovely blue, green and beige eggs. The Old girls had names, but the Baby girls overwhelmed me so no names for them. I am wanting to try some different breeds this year, tho. Our head hen, Miss Snippy Pants likes to hide her eggs, and lay in the woods instead of the nice nesting box, whenever she can get away with it! She is a bad influence on the Little Girls.
Anyway, this year I want to get a couple each of Buff Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex and Barred Rock.
We moved out on 5 acres in the Mohawk Valley 6 years ago, love the rural life. Our chickens have a nice hillbilly looking hen house which has it's own solar panel to light the light bulb, so they are completely off the grid! They even had their own Christmas lights this year. Otherwise we have Biscuit, a springer spaniel, who the chickens follow around and peck his toes. And Max the cat, who is very disdainful of the chickens altogether.
My husband is retired, so can do the main work of chicken raising. Currently, we are a little impaired, as I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago, and my husband fell off the ladder while pruning the apple tree and broke his arm! However, we can still go out and check on the girls to make sure there are no shenanigans going on. I am enjoying being home to watch the girls and actually see them in the daylight.
