Hi everyone! I'm Mariah. My husband, two boys and I move to Oregon from Alaska last summer. It's been quite an adventure. We bought five chicks last September an we've never looked back.

Our girls are: Moxie, white Leighton; Judy, Rhode Island Red; Lottie, australorp; Fred, silver laced wyandotte and Trixie, who we bought as a golden lace wyandotte...but I think she's a mongrel. ;)

We feed organic food and supplement with lots of fresh goodies. They're pretty spoiled, actually! We get four or five eggs a day, religiously.

Also, yesterday my neighbor came and knocked on my door to ask if any of our "turkeys" had gotten loose. I said we only had chickens and she let me know there were two baby poults in our front yard.

I have never owned turkeys! I put them in a large dog kennel with some turkey poult food, grit and fresh water, in case anyone came looking for them, but so far nothing. So I move the kennel into the girls' outside area and I guess we will be adding two turkeys to the flock. I'm guessing they're about 5 weeks old. And they're all white. We have named them Maple and Fig. :)

I've been keeping them in th kennel for now, besides a couple very supervised meetings with the chickens, who are being pretty bratty about the whole thing. Hopefully that won't last too long and the little ones can be comfortably integrated into the flock.

I'd love any and all tips, hints, tricks, book suggestions...anything reputable and reliability about turkeys -- there's just not as much out there for them as there is for chickens!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You don't want to mix Turkeys with Chickens. There are diseases that they can both carry that can endanger and even kill either of them. Turkeys need Turkey or a Gamebird food as well. Adults require a high protein diet somewhere around 24% to 26% protein. Chicks need 28% protein.

So you might want to get going on a new coop!

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

I've already posted in the turkey section, but thanks! Everyone over there said it's fine to house them together...So, I guess my question is, are all turkeys carriers of whatever diseases can kill chickens and/or are all chickens carriers of whatever can kill turkeys? I see several flocks near me with all types of birds comingling. Chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and peacocks...I'm not trying to argue, I promise! It's just the first I've heard of this and we definitely don't have room for a second coop. Our chicken coop and run take up about as much room as we can spare while still being able to provide an area for free range time.

Welcome to BYC! I'm a chicken person and don't know much about turkeys (never had any), but I hope you can get the answers you're looking for. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone! For the welcomes and the advice. I've put in a question with Oregon State University's extension service asking about blackhead in our area. From the reading I've done tonight it, it seems very, very uncommon in my area. So, if that's the only health concern I need to worry about, assuming OSU confirms what I've read tonight, I think we will be okay housing everyone together.
