Hi Everyone,
I have to say "thank goodness for the introduction template," I'm terrible at introducing myself on sites like this. I found this site while doing research prior to purchasing our chicks. We have just purchased 20 chicks 6-white Leghorns (pullets), 6-Red Sex-link (pullets), 4-white Plymouth Rock (straight run) and 4-New Hampshires (straight run).
While my son (the driving force behind this purchase and lifestyle change) and I are new to chickens, my father's family had a working farm that included chickens. So I also have him as a resource. Our plans are primarily for eggs, but some of the Rocks and/or NHs will probably end up on the table before too long.
I am hoping we have a rooster in one of the straight run breeds. I would like to try raising some chicks from eggs, but only time will tell if we have that option.
My son will be joining our local chicken 4-H club, is in little league and is a Cub Scout. We are a somewhat active family, and will be even more so when my fiance returns from deployment. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats, and currently have hatching bullfrog eggs in the aquarium. We enjoy the outdoors and I have long wanted a "hobby farm" with chickens, goats, rabbits and maybe a mini horse or two. I am happy to say this is our first step toward that goal.
**Edit- We do not have 4- wht Plymouth rocks, they are Cornish Rocks. We have picked up 6 more pullets from a friend. I have no idea what they are, she told me their name but I can't find it anywhere. I know it was two parts and both started with T and the are layers, probably a mix or hybrid. We'll love them just the same. Our flock keeps multiplying and they can't even breed yet. We went from 6 to 26 in 4 days. I've put my foot down that there will NO more until we know if we'll need to candle our eggs...
