I'm an artist and a recent college grad (Go Trojans!) who has been researching chickens (and all things farming) for about 2 years now. I plan to get my first chickens this spring - my wife and I will be raising them at her parents' place in Malibu where they've got a nice fenced orchard to range in (and where we'll eventually be moving for a time when our lease is up). My eventual goal is to be a full-time farmer with a focus on poultry and dairy, but I gotta start somewhere! That means building a coop and chicken-proofing the orchard in the next couple of months (spring comes early in SoCal!). Not sure yet if we're just going to be getting layers to start with or raise some meat birds, too. I'd just as soon do the latter, but getting the mother-in-law to allow us to slaughter chickens in the backyard might take some effort! Anyway, this website has been invaluable in my self-education so far, and I look forward to learning a lot from you all.
I may not have any chickens yet, but we've got a corn snake, a chihuahua, and two Paso Finos here in Pasadena, and a gaggle of Australian Shepherds in Malibu!
