Hope everybody hasn't gone stir crazy yet!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I remember my uncles had chickens when I was very young. We bought a house with a fair amount of land just outside town a few years ago and last summer we got our first chicks. We started with 4 chicks and were supposed to get 4 poults a little later but we only got 2 instead because I was concerned about roosting space. I was wrong of course.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 6 hens and a newly acquired rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I honestly don't remember. A local farm store had 4 kinds of layers so we got 1 of each as chicks and 2 as poults. So we have 2 black, 2 red (I call them the brown ones), 1 amber (mostly white with brown on feather tips, looks like a dirty white chicken), and 1 white (leghorn I assume). The rooster is a black Auracauna I believe.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Of course the fresh eggs are really nice. They are hilarious to watch and interact with.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Outside I like being in nature. Fishing, hunting, camping, boating, working in the woods. Inside I'm a PC gamer and coder.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a programmer by day so I like to get outside after work. We have 2 black pugs who are brother and sister, and 1 cat. We also have a younger daughter that loves animals.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Any Google search with the word "chicken" in it will generally bring up BYC at the top of the list. I've been reading these forums for almost 3 years. Need some advice so figured it's time to join.
