Hi eveyone! I'm from Hartstown ,PA. I was born and raised in a farming community. Been around horses, cows, and chickens. Never actually raised chickens myself. My sister and I have talked for a few years about raising some laying hens for our own eggs. Finally did it this year. Since I have the farm, I got the chicks.

Since I'm sorta new at this, I went browsing the net and found this site. There is sooooo much info out there that contradicts each other or aimed at the commercial keeping of chickens. I was glad to find a place where I could ask advice and read about other keepers. I did post an item but think I used a poor subject line. I hope someone will read it and answer my questions.

We got a deal at the local feedmill. It was 25 chicks and a bag of chick starter. I opted for 13 Rhode Island Reds and 12 Golden Buff Cross. They came on May 7. They are currently in my mud/laundry room. My 21-year old daughter is as taken by them as I am. We are looking at this as a new adventure in farming.

Two years ago my husband went back into the pig business( he and his dad used to raise them years ago before I was in the picture) which was an adventure for my daughter and I as we were new to pigs. My husband was very supportive about the chickens as he loves sausage, eggs, and pancakes. We bought the family farm about ten years ago and are slowly but surely getting things going. He and I both have other jobs, so this is purely a hobby type thing. We currently have 4 pigs, 3 horses, a donkey, and a goat. Also a bunch of outdoor cats and 3 dogs. No cows for now. but have had them in the past.

A little long-winded perhaps, but that's me. Hope to make some new friends that can share their chicken experience with a "new egg"!
