Hi everyone at BackyardChickens.com,
Despite that this is my first post, I have to say that me and my wife are already completely addicted to this wonderful website, since reading the new posts is our daily candy in the evening.
Our urban adventure with chicken started in June last year, when I built a chicken coop and bought 9 one year-old hens for my stepmother, that lives with us. Soon, my wife and I fell in love with these charming creatures and I can say now that we have pretty much become chicken insane.
After losing three of our initial flock of nine hens this winter, we got ourselves twenty baby chicks at the beginning of April. We had to cull 7 of these since then, so our flock now stands at 19. But some cruel choices wil have to be made before next winter... (And I am trying not to think about it.)
So here is the description of our flock:
6 two year-old Bovan brown (Georgette, Pamela, Xena, Bequette, Amelie and Savka)
the other are all 14 weeks old:
1 RIR rooster (Alexander the Great)
3 RIR hens (or so we hope...
)
1 Cuckoo Maran rooster (Frankie)
2 Welsummer roosters (Che and Pa-Che)
1 Light Sussex rooster (Zeus)
1 Light Sussex hen (Hera)
1 Ameraucana hen (still unnamed)
1 Easter egger hen (Victoria)
1 BO hen (Bouboule)
1 Black Jersey Giant (Blackie)
In the province of Quebec, the urban chicken movement hasn't really took off yet. That means the big cities' rules don't permit to keep hens in our backyard yet, which pretty much makes us members of the BYC underground for now. Luckily for us, all our neighbors are actually delighted of our initiative, but we buy their silence with fresh eggs just in case...
So that's it for now. We will eventually be posting pictures of our dear ladies and youngsters. Until then, thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences and knowledge, it has already helped us a lot.
Ciao!
