Im just getting started with breeding and raising chickens. I am interested in silkies, sizzles, cochins and ameracauns. I have had chickens before but not anything fancy just your typical farm store layers for eggs. I also just purchased our first incubator so ill be looking for some eggs to fill it up while supporting other farmers!

Welcome to BYC. My son moved to rainy Washington but, prefers that greatly over living in Illinois -0 temps and snow, snow & more snow. Cochins and silkies tend to go "broody" often - which means they want to sit on eggs & hatch them. They will do the same for fertile eggs of other breeds. People often use silkies , Buff Orps & cochins to do the hard work for them. You just watch

vs the difficulties some have with erratic incubators. Having said that, broody hens go broody only when they feel like it, you can't make them but, once they start staying on eggs they generally will continue. You can swap out their eggs and put in those of any breed you want. A great way to bring different breeds or color varieties into your flock.

If you intend to sell or hatch a very large numbers of eggs, then you would need to get appropriate commercial incubators for the job. You can read alot of reference material long before you decide on breeds etc.
 
Thank you all for the welcome! Im not looking to have any large scale operation just more for myself i guess, until my husband tells me no more chickens haha. We moved from the beautiful Sun Valley ID so we know all to well about the Snow and freezing temps and i miss it dearly
