Hi all! My name is Elda and I'm from the Rio Grande Valley. Married to a wonderful guy, parents to four rambunctious kids and caretakers of two sheep and ten chickens.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

As a family, we are new to chickens. We first got our chickens last summer after the kids begged and begged for baby chicks. Growing up my mother regularly raised chickens for eggs. I guess you could say I wanted my kids to experience the joy of having baby chicks and watch them grow up into big beautiful birds. Right now our chickens have started laying eggs and we are seriously consider incubating a small batch to be able to experience the fun of baby chicks all over again!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently we have TEN birds. Three roosters and seven chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Most of the chickens are New Hampshire Reds and we have ONE Game Hen. We have a Barred Rock rooster (Salt-n-Peppa), some kind of cochin mix (Rocker formerly known as SUNFLOWER)(still not sure on that one) and a white rooster that we have no clue as to the breed but my husband fell in love with when he saw him at the swap meet. He'd been wanting a white rooster (Red Eyes) for a while now and was so lucky to have found that one. Red Eyes is the Alpha Roo and takes good care of all the girls.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

We've had several questions about our chickens, being as how this is our first batch, and when we'd do a search BYC was the first site to ALWAYS come up. I couldn't resist and had to join the fun.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I love to sew and make all kind of crafty things. CURRENTLY I make hairbows (for little girls), totes, and jewelry whenever I get a spare minute from tending to either the kids or the chickens. We have a good-sized property so there is always some sort of improvement to be made here or there (and if you ask me it's mostly for the chickens). We also have two sheep that help eat the green stuff. We (mostly ME) plan to try our hand at some sort of garden to feed our animals and OURSELVES!

Here is a blog post from not too long ago, in case you want to meet the feathered members of the family. http://peace-inthe-storm.blogspot.com/2010/01/our-chickens-and-roosters.html

Howdy!

I am originally from Kingsville, TX and have tons of family in the Hebronville area!

We're only a stone throw away from Hebronville! Glad to see there are other people from The Valley in this forum.
