Hi everyone. My name is Doopy and we have just purchased a mini-farm in southeast Indiana. Years ago we had a small farm in south central Ohio but sold everything we owned to purchase a motor home to tour the country. We lived in our motor home for several years and really enjoyed the gypsy lifestyle. We volunteered at many National Parks and Fish and Wildlife Preserves from Florida to Washington state and from Maine to S. California.
Eventually the need for "roots" and the desire to have a home base got to us and we purchased a very rural place in Indiana. Along with a barn and other out-buildings we have acquired a very nice 6 ft. x 8 ft. raised chicken coop with a 40 ft. x 20 ft. fenced run.
Your suggestions are welcome for advice on our "chicken family" plans . . . we still plan to head south during the winter months (December through March ???) and would like to know if it would be possible to have laying and meat chickens in April through November?
I would really like to make a brooder and raise our own young'uns but our "season" may be too short.
Wacha think?
