I've been exploring the BYC sites for a while now, because I've finally convinced my Dh that we should get into raising some chickens on our small farm. We have an old wooden granary that I'm going to be rescuing/restoring/renovating to create our chicken coop. At the moment it's piled high with, um, "stuff".... So cleaning it out will be step one this spring. So far I'm pretty set on Buff Orpingtons for our breed, but I'm also considering the White Chantceler and just for the novelty... Maybe a few silkies????

! Pleased you joined our community! Sounds like the the Orps and Chanteclers are you are looking at are both great cold weather breeds - unsure about silkies. Best of luck with your coop renovation and have fun!

Have fun with your project!

Thanks for the warm welcome :D
The silkies might be just a day dream for now. I do know of someone 2 hours north of us who has them, so maybe some day right. Dh is a carpenter by trade.... I think he's probably just as excited as I am... But he won't let on that he is.

Hi!!!

I am moving to Sask in less than a month!! Where are you? We'll be in the south. I have two sheds that would be perfect for my egg layers (just boring run of the mill production reds) but I'm looking into meat birds to go into the converted garage. I have no idea what I'm in for in Sask. Is it as cold as they say?

cluck on!
