Hi guys from Scotland!! I've only been member for a few days but this site is SO cool. I will be getting chickens after the summer but first need to build my coop! I am going to convert an old "tree house" and will put a webcam in there. If I manage to get it online (slightly immposible, but still I'll try) ill let u guys know. If you have any tips on building my coop or on chicken breeds (I'd want the friendliest breed possible), feeding them etc please say.

LittleChooks,

Hi and

. Never come across a Scott before! I'm Australian myself, nice to meet you!
Are you going to keep the tree house on the tree? Bad idea if so. The chooks will have a hard time getting there!

Buff Orps. are a nice gentle breed, consider them or a Mix Breed (ISA brown etc.) they have stand out personalities. Have two myself. If you get them, join us at the ISA brown, Hybrid and Mix Breeds thread at Breeds Genetics and showing!
Good Luck

Thanks. It's not exactly up a tree, more 1m of the ground on stilts with a pretty high roof so plenty of space for roosting. Do you know how high roosts can be up off the ground?

You want your perches/roosts high enough, but the chooks need to be able to fly up to them when full grown. When they are young pullets either carry them, our place some bricks, steps etc. for them to leap off.Around 24" high is what I heard online for some Jersey Giants. It all depends on the weight of the chicken (or its breed) which alters the height.
