Hello! This kind post doesn't come easily to me so I've taken full advantage of the "getting started template" for us newbies!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've admired from afar, but have never been able to have my own until now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Ordered this week with a local supplier!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Newbie recommendations - I've ordered Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, White Leghorn and Silver Laced Wyandotte. There were many I wanted but I guess you have to start somewhere!

4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Waiting to discover what this answer will be!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Canning, gardening and hiking when possible
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I was an Iowa transplant to SoCal many years ago and I've found that you really can't take the "country" out of the girl. :D I've spent all of my working years waiting for the day to be able to raise chickens. I'd also like a donkey and goats, but I don't think my neighbors or the city I live in would be very appreciative!
I'm a very recent retiree and I'm blessed to have a wonderfully inquisitive and loving 5 year old Granddaughter with me when not in school and while Mom works. The chickens will be our hobby together.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been researching raising baby chicks through YouTube videos and blogs for quite some time. BYC came up multiple times as a great resource for both newbies as well as ongoing help. Hoping to work my way up to someday being able to return the favor for another newbie or sharing learned knowledge.

First of all, you're right about not being able to take the "country" out of the girl.

I grew up in rural southern Iowa where we had chickens, ducks and sheep. I spent (too many) years living in towns and cities, and now, thankfully have an acreage in near Fort Dodge where I can have any critter I want. I have a LOT of chickens, ducks and geese, still have sheep and goats, and used to have donkeys, plus --of course -- dogs and cats.

Sounds like you have some really good starter breeds on the way and that you will have some good foundation knowledge for caring for them. I bet your granddaughter will fall in love with the chicks!

Retirement has been amazing for me; I hope it's the same for you.

Welcome to BYC; this is a great community of folks who will be happy to help you with any concerns or challenges and cheer your successes!
