Hi everyone I'm very new to raising chickens. I've been wanting to do this for a long time but couldn't get my husband on board. I went to a chicken "TALK" at our local feed store and decided to just jump into this. The "girls" are 3 1/2 weeks old right now and still living in the dining room....though they are quickly outgrowing the brooder my husband constructed out of a large plastic storage box. I have a flock of 8, 4 Rhode Island Reds and 4 Golden Commets. The backyard coop is almost completed and he's working on the run now. It's still so cold at night here in Connecticut, I don't know when I can put them out side. Maybe this weekend I'll start putting them out during the day. I don't think I could do this without all the info on this site!

HI and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Your chicks will need supplemental heat until they are fully feathered, at 6 weeks.

What type of heat light should I look for? The coop isn't close to the house so I'll have to run a long extension cord.
