Hello everyone,

This is my first batch of chickens, but I do have some experience with chicken. My dad had a few for eggs and I got to thin the rats.

I have 24 Delaware chickens that are about 4 weeks old. I ordered 15 hens and 10 roosters, but lost one of the hens early on. I only have a couple runty one, the rest seem true to the propaganda on Delaware as they are mostly feathered out and seem to be growing pretty fast.

I found this site while looking for information on the different breeds.

I originally just wanted a few chickens for eggs and bug control until I tried putting a shovel into the old barren horse pasture. So my thoughts switched from eggs to a nitrogen source for compost.

I picked Delawares as it was on the list of endangered breeds and was a fast grower that was good for free range or confinement. The thought is to do a tractor thing with them for a couple years until I can get grass (or anything) back in pasture then I will let them free range.

Welcome from another chicken person in the Sierras! We live on the eastern side, not far from Lake Tahoe. Chickens are so much fun!

We can't keep up with the egg orders and have some day-old Delawares coming this week. I hope they're cranking out eggs like crazy this Fall!!!

So glad you found this fun site! I was not aware the Delaware was an endangered breed. Good choice!
Hope to see you on here often.

thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

I may have used the wrong wording when I said "Delaware chicken are endangered". According to the ALBC they are listed as Critical, but the definition of critical uses the word endangered so hopefully I get some credit.

I was sort of surprised to see the number of breeds on the critical list. It could be ALBC is mostly considering the large breeder and not backyard folks.
