Hello! I have been keeping ducks for about three years, never more than 10 at a time. Right now I have 3 grown females who have decided to live at our pond, as they abandoned their shed a year or so ago. Now they just come to the house to eat. I tried to get them to reproduce on their own, however they were “free range” and their eggs were found by my dogs all over the property so now I am down to 3 from the original 6. They are grey & white, I forgot what kind.
Today a friend-of-a-friend found an orphaned “duckling” and when they called the local wildlife protection agency they said they only take Ruens - how they could tell what it is I do not know. Anyhow now I have a single duckling who seems quite lonely and wants to be held by humans constantly. He/She seems to be less than a week old, however larger than I remember my ducks being so I am wondering if it is actually a goose. Can anyone tell the difference? Also how cruel is it to keep a solitary duckling/gosling? My adult ducks paid no attention to it when they came up for food today. We thought of adopting more at a local feed store but no one has any right now because of the COVID 19 shutdown in Sonoma County.
