I'm Jenna, aka Mama Chicken! I got that nickname back in high school when a friend and I were fooling around with my dads CB radio. "Mama Chicken this is Baby Chicken, do you read me?!?"

It just stuck for some reason! My DH and I are just finishing up building our first coop out of scrap materials we and our dads have come up with. The only cost so far is a box of nails and all we need to finish is the wire!! It's definitely not the prettiest thing around, but we're pretty proud of it

I just got word that our order of Buckeyes and Delaware won't be here until June (aaaahhhhh!!!!) so I'm currently fighting back the urge to get a couple different chicks from a local supplier

I have a small confession.... I'm a little scared of chickens!! Well, grown chickens. I had the classic rooster attack trying to go get a popsicle from my granny's house next door when I was little and still get a wee bit nervous around them. I feel pretty confident about keeping them now, as long as I raise them from babies and get to know them and vise versa!

Did anyone else feel this way when they were getting their first chicks? Any words of encouragement or suggestions are more than welcome!!

And it's great that yall are here sharing your vast knowledge and wisdom! Thanks!!

Hello Jenna from South Georgia!! I am from S GA as well. I will tell you this about chickens. You need not worry too much about the hens but roosters can be mean and intimidating at times. You'll know if they are the mean type. We had some Seabright bantam roosters and they would go into attack mode if you turned your back or walkied away from them. I got tickled at my wife running from them. She would turn and face them and tell them to STOP!! And they would until she turned her back to them. I have read from different websites that you have to establish yourself as the dominant rooster of the flock. I don't know if it actually works but maybe some other people will chime in and give you some advice. My advice is to always keep your eyes on them. When their spurs get long, they can hurt you and can leave a nasty infection. Also if you just want eggs, roosters aren't even needed.

Good Luck,
Bob

Welcome Jenna, I am also new to BYC and live in GA ( metro Atlanta area- Rockdale County ), We just got our chicks on Monday and my wife thinks they are "so cute', but a couple of weeks ago we saw some chickens (buff orps) in a front yard and I told her that was the breed we ordered and she didn't know they were that big and said she might be afraid of them. Now that she has seen the chicks she knows that they will get to know us and see us as their friends. Welcome aboard BYC, tons of great info and good reading here.

Wow! Thanks for all of the warm welcomes! I think I'm gonna like this community a whole lot!

For this reason, I almost went with bantams, but decided I'd just have to get over it because I wanted some dual purpose chickens!
