My wife and I are in the planning stages of acquiring chickens, so I thought that BYC would be a great resource to have available. We live in Southeast Kentucky, on 32 mostly wooded acres. Chickens will be our first experience with livestock, unless you count the cat and two dogs who share our home 
We are interested in organic gardening and simple/sustainable living topics.
We haven't picked out a chicken breed yet, but are currently doing research. We know that we want to go with a heritage breed, and will likely choose something from the ALBC Recovering list. We plan to start our flock with 10 pullets and a rooster. We plan to let our chickens free range during the day, and put them in a coop at night. Eventually we'd like to grow most, if not all, of the food required to supplement the chicken's foraging.
