Hi,
I'm a new member located in Southern California in North San Diego county. I got into having chickens several months ago, following in the footsteps of my neighbor. In fact, I have her last hen due to some dog/hen and coyote issues she was having.
I have five hens. One is around 8 months old and supposedly an Araucana, though she is probably an Ameraucana. She is blue in color with cute puffy cheecks. However, she has a bit of a tail, which is not an Araucana trait. Her name is blue. She survived a dog attack and is doing just fine.
The other girls were hatched Sept 29. I picked them up at the local feed store. Chester is a light brahma... I thought she looked like a Chester. Alisaurus (Alice) and Raptricia (Tricia) are supposed to be Ameraucana. We shall see. Alice have the puffy cheeks, both have green legs. Alice is an iridescent gray brown color. Tricia is rather red and was gold and red when young. Finally, there is T-Rex (Trixie). She is a Wellsummer.
The family has a lot of fun with the chickens. I can't wait to see what type of eggs they will lay. I think Blue is a bit behind. I don't know if it is the weather or the trauma. Maybe she is laying in a hidden location.
We have to build a coop, but they live in the yard for now.
