Southern Virginia
Hello, from southern Virginia. We recently bought a home on a little under an acre, hoping to buy the 5 acres behind us and be a bit more self sufficient.

I am going to use the introduction questions provided..

*Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am not new to chicken's. I grew up with our family having about 20 chickens, 10 broilers, 10 hens and a few roosters.
My parents did the killing but we helped pluck feathers and dress the chickens.
My Mom would take us in the bathroom with no windows and put a flashlight behind the egg so we could see the growth. We collected the eggs but weren't allowed to get close to the chickens, my parents thought it would be too hard for us.

I haven't had chickens in many years so this is all new to me in many ways.

*How many chickens do you have right now?

We ordered 10 rare and unique breed combo from Mt Healthy hatchery. They are due to be here around the 29th. We are so excited! I got the brooder set up and we are working on the coop. We should have the coop finished next weekend.

*What breeds do you have?

I don't know what breeds we will get, it's hatchery choice of female chicks. We will get at least 3 different breeds. I am so excited!

*What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love the idea of having fresh eggs and chickens to love, I don't know yet if we could have broilers. I don't know if I can kill and dress chickens I have raised myself. We will see..

*What are some of your other hobbies?

I enjoy organic gardening, I have a lot of experience but it will be a little bit of a learning curve moving to a new climate and soil.

As much as we love homesteading and living off the land, we are all nerdy, we play video games when we have the time and Dungeon and Dragons is a common event with our grown kids.

I am an avid reader, at least 3 books a week. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy for fiction and almost anything non-fiction.

*Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We have 5 kids between us, all are grown except one who will be 18 this fall.

We have 2 dogs, a German shepherd/Mastiff mix and a Belgian malinois.
We have 3 cats indoors and are taking care of 4 strays that were at our home when we bought it. They were skinny and sickly. We built them a shelter and self feeder and waterer. Another cat was under our house, not part of the stray group. He was in bad shape. We took him in and he made our 3rd addition of cats. He is the sweetest of all of them.

I am a former educator. My fiance was a teacher as well but now works from home in the education field.

I look forward to getting to know other chicken enthusiast's and making some new friends.
