I had chickens when I lived on Cape Cod....the buyer of my home when I sold wanted my girls, so I passed them and my coop to her. VA has laws about transporting live chickens over state lines....and I have always missed my girls since moving south in 2013. I got alot of my info when I first started from backyardchickens.com and my neighbor, who was a chicken pro!
I have decided to rejoin the backyard chicken club! My chicks were ordered on line and they are on their way! Im starting with 10 Rhode Island Reds ( like I had up north: good layers!) Im prepared with heat lamp, large livestock tub, waterer, feeder etc in my home office while I am busy converting a horse stall into a coop! Challenging project for this senior lady....but the nesting boxes are done! and next comes the stall conversion I have planned in my head. Stand by for questions from me!

Welcome back!!! Good for you on all the prep work and best of luck with your girls! And, as one senior lady to another, congrats on converting that horse stall and getting your nest boxes done. Some of my "construction" projects out here could be mistaken for "demolition" targets. But, if it works, it works no matter how it looks.

Keep us posted on how it goes with your chicks.

Demolition project.....Yep! Pretty sure my back yard debris pile from tearing apart pallets looked like that! Im still thinking on how to predator dig proof the exterior wall of the stall. I have 3 horses and 2 donkeys on patrol, and I know the donks are great watchdogs....but still. Ideas welcome!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

One can't stay away from chickens long, once they get into your blood they are there forever. :D

Good luck with your chicks, if you have any questions about them along the way, be sure to ask. Welcome aboard! :-)

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Install a predator apron around the exterior. You'll have to keep the equines off of it! Or you'll have to bury it.
Yes...its an up slope on that side of the barn....Will have to dig it out. Just watched a video of how to lay out. Thank you!
