Hello Everyone,

I have been lurking on the forums for a month or so learning as much as I can. I have to say I appreciate how knowledgeable and respectful a great many of the members are on the forums. I grew up on a small farm here in Missouri where we raised cattle for beef and sometimes had pigs. The cattle must've kept us busy enough because we never tried our hand at raising chickens, but I am trying it now with my wife and two young boys (5 and 2). We live on a small 2+ acre plot and have 12 hens. It really is trial by fire, but the information available on here has been a tremendous help thus far. So a big thank you to everyone who contributes by sharing experiences, trials, results, or even just anecdotal stories. To everyone in the States, have a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

P.S. I'll share something that we have learned in our short time as chicken owners. We recently installed a small solar light in the coop and found that the girls will come right in at night once we turn on the lights. Prior to that they would huddle at the door trying to peek at the moonlight. The very night we installed the small light they began roosting at staring at in awe. The light really helped train them to come in for the night. It's probably common knowledge on here, but like I said, we are newbies!

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us and sharing your experience with the light - great that it worked out

Cool about that light! I've never experienced this. Mine always came in at dusk and if for some reason it was darker outside than usual (storm clouds and whatnot) they would strain to see the roosts once in a while.
We have electricity and two bulbs in my new coop, so I'm excited to see what happens!
