Hello, My name is Gayle and I live in Rochester, WA which is about 23 miles South of our Capital, Olympia. I have Phoenix Chickens...2 Roosters and about 10 hens...last count. My Chickens are "free range", inasmuch as I can't catch them......but I'm working on it. I have been around Chickens most all of my life....we had Silkies when I was a kid. My Dad use to bring them home from the State Game Farm, back in the 50's. Hmmmm that seems to have covered the first three subjects in my list.
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
(3) What breeds do you have?
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I actually found out by accident....I have been searching for Ice Pigeons and from that search, I ended up on your back porch!!! And that takes me to number 5......
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Pigeons....I love Pigeons. I have two big lofts and one small loft (more like a giant cage with a fly pen attached) down by my garden....all have fly pens. In one loft, I have American Rollers. And in my second loft, I want to fill it with my first love....clean legged Ice Pigeons. Both the blue and the Khaki. And then I have a very small loft, down by my potting shed that I want to house 2 pair of Arabian Trumpeters....of which I am also still looking for. Then....I also have dogs. Lots of dogs. I use to breed, and now I rescue. I have Joe, Zeebo, Sasha, Molly and Moogie.....all Cockers that I rescued after my dear friend that showed for years, passed away. I still have Melli, Henry, Ruben and Heidi that are rescues awaiting adoption; all Cocker Spaniels. Then I have my 4 teeny Poodles...the biggest is 4 lbs and the smallest is 2 1/2 lbs. I also have two Rosy Bourkes....which upon maturing it has been discovered they are both girls. I have 2 Lovebird boys. A Spice Finch; a pair of Lady Gouldians; my Dads OLD Cockatiel, a bunch of Zebra Finches and my buddy, "Bird" who is a male Ringneck Parakeet. So, these are my hobby's as well as my family. I am also a gardener....flowers and I'm working my way into an English Garden....someday. I want my little corner to be FULL of flowers, like it's been there for a hundred years...needless to say, it's an endless project.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Occupation....I am an I.T. Specialist. I work for Providence Health and Services as an I.T. Desktop Specialist. I've been with Providence for 16 years now. And I have a small 2 acre farm where I have lived alone, and with my Grand daughter, for the past 20 years. My Grand daughter moved out at age 18, 2 years ago. So now it's back to being just me; with all my furry and feathered friends.
I am also on a trek, trying to catch up all my chickens so I can put my hens in the hen house....and my roosters...well, I guess they can stay free range. But I've been feeding these chickens for years, and buying eggs at the local grocery because when I find eggs...I never know how old they are. So, I'm working on rectifying that problem.....
So, that is a bit about me, my home and family. And one of these days I'll come looking for some help on setting up my hen house with nests and such. And I plan on doing a lot of looking and listening!!!!! I am so glad I found this place....
