Ok so not really the arctic but close haha. I live in northern Aroostook County Maine and bare some extreme winters. I currently have no chickens or animals except a cat but I wanted to get information to start raising just a couple for eggs. I have done a bit of reading and feel more confidant about chickens living in this harsh environment. So any advice on raising chickens in the cold would be appreciated, and I would like to get as far as possible without electrically heating. I am too worried about burns, fires, and heating bills so if i am going to need to heat the coop I most likely will decide against chickens.

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad you joined. I give you a lot of credit, I could never live where it gets that cold. Your coop would definitely have to be well insulated and draft free. :thumbsup

Don't let the state name fool you....we live up at 7,000 feet and see a TON of winter. Last year we had 4 nights in a row with -30 degree temps! Day time highs barely cracked -18. LOL But everybody survived. Heat is not necessary as the chickens will adapt to the temps as the winter rolls on. Of course if somebody is old or sick you can always isolate and add heat. Also, adding heat also creates moisture. Warm air mixing with cold air and you will have frost bitten combs. So don't be afraid the open all the vents and windows!! I was having all sorts of trouble with frost bite before I just flung open every vent and window, and the frost bite stopped! Chickens need a ton of air and it needs to whick away from the combs. So keep the windows open!!

As you go along, you can post up any questions you have in the different sections here and the folks will be glad to help!
