(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have had chickens in my backyard for more than a year now. But my family has deep roots in the Canadian poultry industry. Rearing as well as proceessing. The full life cycle. So chicken has always been the family business. I personally focused on the cooking side for parties and events. a few hundred birds at a time for big weddings, church events, etc.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 7 ladies, all different breeds. My 4 year old helped me pick the ones that were "the best".

(3) What breeds do you have?
Sussex,
Blausperber (A german breed, like a barred rock)
Black Bovan,
ISA Brown,
Grunleger (A german mix. Some kind of blue-brown mix)
Something called "Silberhals" I don't know what it actually is.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love how derpy they are. haha. I often work on my computer in the yard and they keep me company and sometimes warm when they sleep on me. I love how happy they make my daughter when they ear the dried larve from her hands. My daughter went through a phasee where she ate 4 egg whites a day. For a 4 year old that's a lot. But I knew where the eggs came from and how fresh they were. It was just nice knowing she was getting the best quality for what little she would actually eat. Shes a very picky eater.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a nerd. I play World of Warcraft and Helldivers 2. Beyond that I've started a small garden for my family and I'm going to give Aquaponics a go with some local fish! I'm excited to try that. I guess I like to provide the best quality food I can for my wife and daughter.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
It's just me and my daughter. My wife is German and I'm Canadian. We live near her family in Germany with our daughter. No other pets, unless you classify my daughter's love of pretending to be a dog as a psudo-pet.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
When I was doing research on chickens for my backyard I found the site and it kept coming up when I was building the run and googling "what plants are good for chickens" so I could give them some good natural vitamins and environment.

Welcome to the site! We're glad you joined. :welcome

You have some interesting breeds that I've never heard of. Any photos of the flock you like to share?

This is the Blausperber, Sal Monella. She's top of the pecking order, and more than happy to steal the sandwich from your plate if you're not paying attention. For whatever reason she likes to sleep.up there despite having a rather comfy coop. Now they all sleep up there. The coop is now only for very cold nights.

The other's names can get confusing out of context. Eg. The Sussex, which is white, is named "Green". Essentially I named this one and a 3 year old named the others based on her favourite colours. *shrug*
