Hello, All!

My name is Al and with the encouragement and support of some coworkers who have chickens, I decided to jump in this season! I had been buying a coworker's fresh eggs for $4 dozen, couldn't get over how much better her eggs were than the ones I was getting from the store.

I bought a small unfinished chicken tractor from the same coworker and 3 Australorp chicks from Southern States Feed and Supply. I wanted Barred Rock and Buff Orpington, as these had come recommended. But on the day I went, all that was available were the Australorps. So far, they've been great, though. They are docile and tame, eat feed from my hand. I might still add a Barred Rock or a Buff Orpington, down the road.

Another coworker told me about Backyard Chickens.com and what a wealth of info you have here! I may not need to buy one of the guidebooks, looks like you all have it here.

As for me, I'm originally from Tampa, FL but moved up here to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of NC several years ago. It is a nice place to raise a family. The kids love the chickens and have been great helpers. I am a writer, musician and licensed counseling therapist. A few years ago I built a homemade teardrop style camper, and I like to go camping. I have also been working on a homemade cigarbox fiddle. I am involved in web groups for those interests, too. I work as a counselor at a local hospital emergency room. I also teach counseling courses at two different colleges.

I'm looking forward to being part of this group and I am really enjoying the chickens. I find myself going out to the pen and just watching them for 20 minutes at a time. They are fun to watch and it is a relaxing endeavor.

All the best!

AL.

The only thing I would tell you is to change out the poultry wire for 1/2" hardware cloth. Chicken wire keeps chickens in but, nothing out. It is easily shredded by preds. Otherwise everything looks good.
