(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Hi, everyone! We are new to chickens. We started mid-April of this year (2021).

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

My daughter has 4 emotional support chickens. The whole family has fallen in love with them. If you’re wondering, how do I get emotional support chickens, well she has autism, ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Her psychiatrist wrote a prescription for her to have the chickens. They have worked wonders! The psychiatrist physicians assistant even told me she has a veterinarian as a client who has emotional support chickens she takes to her office with her every day. She even has a coop in her office for them! Whenever the veterinarian becomes overwhelmed she will stop to go in her office and hold her chickens and end to them. And she swears it works wonders for her.

(3) What breeds do you have?

She has two white Silkies and two buff Brahmas. When we bought them we were assured they were both hens, however it turns out we have one rooster of each and one hen of each. I’m still not sure if we will take on breeding. But I better get sure pretty quick either way!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

At this point they are not yet backyard chickens. They are still inside. We are working to build their coop and a run, however they will most likely be on our deck. We live in the woods on a river so snakes are all around as are wild animals. I’m praying I can talk my husband into making them house chickens, but don’t tell him! Ha ha! I do think that would be best for my daughter as these are her emotional support chickens. As mom, I enjoy their personalities and seeing how much joy they bring to my daughter. And to be honest, they bring that amount of joy to me, too! They are calming to her, and they give her laughter, too. I think she identifies with some of their little nervous mannerisms, but she likes that she can hold them and cause them to relax.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

My daughter, the chicken mom, likes to sing, write musicals, and play volleyball. She is hoping to become a professor teaching college algebra and drama. As the main caretaker, and mom of the chicken mom, love to care for my family. I am also an artist and enjoy painting in watercolor, gouache, and oil. And I love decorating, so I’m always coming up with new ideas and driving my husband crazy. You can’t come in to our home without at least finding three rooms in the painfully delightful turmoil of redecoration.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We have three of us living at home, my chicken mom daughter, my husband, and myself. We also have two small indoor dogs. One is a Shih Tzu Schnauzer mix and his name is Gator for the Florida Gators. The other is a Schnauzer Chihuahua mix. His name is Tucker. Tucker is very curious and every time the chickens make a noise like they are uncomfortable or unhappy he runs over to them. I can’t decide if he wants to comfort them or eat them. Often he is licking his lips on his way to run to the chickens. Gator could care less. He knows he has been the Prime Pet of the house since 2014 when he was a year old and came to live with us. I am a stay at home mom, my husband is a specialized golf course equipment supervisor, and my daughter, the chicken mom, is a student in high school. We have another daughter who is older and claims the male Silkie as her favorite. She, however, lives in North Carolina and is a property manager for an apartment complex for college students. She is married and her husband is also loves the chickens. And the family chicken love doesn’t stop there. My mother, the chicken mom‘s grandmother, loves the chickens, too. She asks me to post pictures so that she can share them with family and friends. And I can confidently say she loves them more than she does Tucker, at least. Ha ha!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

How could you NOT find backyard chickens??? If you have any question to ask the Internet about a chicken I can pretty much guarantee backyardchickens.com will come up as a choice to find your answer. it seems this site has pretty much covered all the bases of caring for chickens. I’ve been researching since April since we decided which chickens to get in mid April and have known about backyardchickens.com since then. Until now I didn’t know I had to join to be part of the community, but I’m so glad I did. I want all the information I can get! And I want to buy some chicken aprons and chicken diapers. Hopefully those diapers will it’s just what I need to help me talk my husband into letting the chickens stay inside! I care about the safety of my daughter’s chickens, especially because they are here for her emotional support and we live on a river in the woods full of wild animals and snakes.

*YEP, WE KNOW WE DRESSED A ROOSTER UP AS A FEMALE IN THE HOMAGE TO THE ROYAL FAMILY.
(Originally, when we thought that all of our chickens were hens, my older daughter was allowed to name that one. She wanted the chicken to be named Francine. So, for weeks we called this one Francine. When Francine crowed for the first time she became FranKcine. And she became a HE. Sorry, FranKcine, for not knowing earlier.)
