Hello from the S Tier of NY. My name is Ron and I just started raising coturnix quail. I am married with 3 children. My wife and I spend the last 18 years running from one softball/baseball field to the next. My youngest just graduated from high school and my wife and I decided to try something different. I grew up with my mother raising goats and rabbits while my Grandfather raise several different types of poultry from chicken, duck's, geese, turkey, and pidgins.

We just had our first hatch on 4/1. Didn't go well as we hatched 19 our of 60. They were shipped eggs and went over the weekend of 3/15 with 15 degree temps so I'm thinking that didn't help. We lost 2 chicks but currently have 17 health quail. 6 female and 11 male. My intent is eggs and meat but my wife started naming the roosters so this may get interesting. To our surprise we had our 1st egg this morning at not quite 6 weeks. We currently have 35 in our incubator so I'm hoping for better numbers come next week.

I came across this site a couple months ago and have found the information extremely valuable.

Nice meeting everyone.

Ron

Welcome to Backyard Chickens (and quail). All (bad things) considered that was a good hatch.
Plus raising them is a lot easier on the feet than running from softball to to baseball fields.
You may also want to check out the "Quail forum," if/when you need more specific information about them.

Thank you for joining the flock.-pretend these are quail :jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy

Hello, Ron, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm in the Southern Tier too!
Did you know there is a guy in Endicott that sells quail chicks and eggs? Maybe you could either buy chicks from him or see if he sells hatching eggs too if you want to try that route again. Broome County Quail on FB.
