Hello. I'm new to the board and have never had chickens, though I've long wanted some.
Naturally, at the time when my DH is feeling the desire to be more self-sufficient and is thus willing to put the money and effort into getting chickens we live in town. So first will be to discover if chickens are legal here.
We are quite sure that we heard chickens on the other side of the block last summer but they may not have been legal chickens and were sufficiently well-concealed that we never figured out which house they belonged to.
Our thought is that 6 laying hens could provide a reasonable number of eggs for a family of 6 (with teens), while requiring only modest housing and a reasonable-sized run.
So I'm here researching how well theory and reality are likely to mesh while my DH looks into the town ordinances to see if and under what circumstances we can keep chickens in town.
