hello from the sierra foothills

old graybeard gentleman farmer here, re-building a flock of chickens after a few years without. Had to take out the old chicken run and coop some years back to make way for the then-new vineyard. Now adding back a much-improved (read: "overbuilt") run and cozy little coop from Creative Coops. Picked up some Ameracaunas (easter eggers, whatever) and Iowa Blues from a local farm, and have an eFowl order in for RIR's, Ameracaunas, and Cuckoo Marans. The cockerels are destined for the freezer, the hens for the flock. Previously kept about 8 birds at a time, pushing that up to 12+ this time - free ranging the vineyard and working the ever-increasing compost piles.

Anyone have any tips on how to keep a quiet rooster?

Unsure if there is a way to make a rooster pipe down...short of a trip to freezer town. There might be less vocal roosters out there but I'm sure variability exists within each species. Good luck to you!

Hello to Sierra foothills. Welcome to you. Are you on 80 side or 50 side? I am above Placerville. No roosters for me due to association I live in. Just hope they don't find out I have 20 chicken!!

hey there 8machines. I'm northwest of Nevada City. No restrictions on roosters here, just too ****** noisy for me. Much as I'd like to keep one with the flock for protection. 20 eh? Now that's a good sized flock. I'll try keeping 12 or so for this season, and see how that goes. I think our high point previously was 8, but I need a lot more composting done on the little farm these days.
