Hello, my name is Ashley and I'm not only new to here but I'm also new to the world of chickens (and very excited). Our first chicks (auricana) will be arriving in about a week and a half to two weeks. We also might buy a couple silkies. My two kids and I have spent a lot of time on here reading and learning lately and boy is there a lot to learn but I'm excited for the venture.

Welcome to BYC, Ashley. Glad you decided join our flock. Where are you getting your Araucanas from? If they are coming from a hatchery or feed store, they will be Easter Eggers as opposed to true Aruacanas which are relatively rare and expensive, have tailless rumps, lay only blue eggs, and are available only from breeders. Easter Eggers are hybrids that hatcheries produce by crossing blue egg layers with brown egg layers to produce offspring that lay eggs in colors other than just blue. Hatcheries and feed stores often incorrectly sell their Easter Eggers under the labels Araucana or Ameraucana. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html explaining the difference between Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Easter Eggers. There is nothing wrong with Easter Eggers. They will typically outlay true Araucanas. Our EEs are my granddaughter's (pictured in my avatar) favorite chickens. She loves their colored eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!!

Congrats on the soon to be new babies! I am sure you have seen our learning center. All kinds of good articles there on all the aspects of keeping chickens. If not, click on that tab at the top that says Learning Center.

Silkies sure are cutie pies too! Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Glad you could join our community! Araucanas, or the more common "Easter Egger" are great birds to keep. They usually have good temperaments and lay lovely colored eggs. My Easter Egger has been a very good pet for the past four years, and I would definitely recomend them to any new chicken keeper. Silkies are a nice breed, too, well known for their gentleness and tendency to go broody. Both breeds would make excellent pets for your children.

The Learning Center is a great place to start learning. In particular, I'd check out the articles on Raising Chicks: Hatching Eggs And Raising Chicks

Good luck with your future chicks! Hope you enjoy raising them as much as we have.
