The Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is heaven on earth too, after growing up in the NEK:lol:

Molly, how are your bees making out? We have hives with family in Vermont and had hives down here as well, but these ones all died. Waiting to hear on the condition of the hives up there, will be 6 weeks before its safe to say they made it through.

So far, so good, with the bees. We had a warm spell at the beginning of last week (it got up to about 45) and I went out to check on them. I put a feeder on and they were alive and well at that point. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! They made it through our cold snap in mid-January when it was -32 here at our house...So we'll see. My fingers are crossed. These are Italian bees, We're getting a nuc of Russians this spring and I'm really interested to compare and contrast the hives.

I'm sorry you lost your colonies down there.

What happened, do you know?

We don't wrap the hives up tight down here like we do in Vermont; We have had a very cold winter for this area and it is pretty hard on them when it is 65 deg one day and in the single digits the next.

I can imagine that would be hard on them...Are you going to replace them? How do people's hives do in general where you are? Have they been impacted by CCD? Do you have trouble with varroa?

Awesome! I know a friend of mine is on here as well - also a Vermonter. Not sure of her screen name...

I'm here! It just took me a few months to stop lurking and register
