Hello everyone
I am totally new to raising chickens. I am starting the building of a coop this weekend (thank you BYC for ideas/plans) and plan to acquire 4 hens in a few weeks.

I went to the larger local feed store to inquire about where to buy chickens and the nice man there told me I had several options-the store has chicks in March, farmers market has people who sell them and his son raises chickens -told me where he lives and it's less than two miles from me. I stopped by and met his son and his wife and arranged to come back in a couple weeks to purchase some hens. I am very excited. The young man had several breeds and seemed quite knowledgable.

I have only lived in the "country" since hurricane Katrina- but I am looking forward to this new adventure. I hope to meet new friends and learn from more experienced chicken enthusiasts.

This website has been extremely helpful so far-thanks.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC and Happy Holidays!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks. Do you know what breeds he has?

He has a variety of breeds , some he keeps separate for "pure" breeding others are mixed. I haven't learned all the names yet but I will post pictures and breeds when I get mine. I do know he has Ginny's that run free and nest in the trees above his coops. I will not be starting with Ginny's. This young man also has ducks, geese, turkeys.

Thank you -I am sure I will have questions as things progress.

My cousin and his wife have silkies in Slidell.
